The number on a cement bag, 32.5, 42.5 or 52.5, is the cement's strength class. It is the minimum compressive strength, in megapascals (MPa), the cement reaches after 28 days when tested to the European standard EN 197-1. A higher number means a stronger cement. The letter after it, N or R, tells you how fast it gains early strength.
What do N and R mean on a cement bag?
N means normal early strength. R means high early strength, so the cement hardens and gains strength faster in the first days. R grades help when you need to strike formwork sooner or keep to a tight schedule.
What does CEM II mean?
CEM II is a Portland composite cement under EN 197-1. It is made from Portland clinker plus other approved materials such as limestone (letter L) or a mix of materials (letter M). The letters A, B and C show how much of that other material is in the cement: A has the least, C has the most.
Which grade should you use?
The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) published guidance on this in January 2025, as reported by Citi Newsroom. In summary:
- 32.5R (Portland limestone or composite cement): general work such as plastering, masonry and screeding.
- 42.5R: producing concrete products such as building blocks and pavement slabs.
- 42.5N: ready-mixed concrete and high-rise construction.
- 52.5N: structural elements in high-rise buildings, such as beams, columns and suspended slabs.
Always follow the advice of your engineer for structural work. This guide is general information, not a design specification. See the full which cement for blocks, plastering and columns guide.

These names, grades and uses are as published by CIMAF.
Which grade should a retailer stock?
It depends on who buys from you. A shop near block makers sells more 32.5 and 42.5 grades. A shop that serves contractors on larger projects needs a 52.5 grade as well. Stocking two or three products lets you serve both. Read how to order by the truckload.
Frequently asked questions
Is 52.5 cement always better than 32.5? It is stronger, not always better. Use the grade that fits the job. Using a higher grade than you need adds cost without adding value.
What is the difference between 42.5N and 42.5R? They reach the same strength at 28 days. The R grade gains strength faster in the first days.
Which cement is best for plastering? The GSA guidance points to 32.5R for plastering, masonry and screeding. CIMAF also lists Ultimate Plus (42.5R) for plastering and general masonry.
