Cement: Which Cement Should You Use for Blocks, Plastering and Columns in Ghana?

Use 32.5R cement for plastering, masonry and screeding, 42.5R for making blocks and pavement slabs, 42.5N for ready-mixed concrete and high-rise work, and 52.5N for beams, columns and suspended slabs. That is the guidance the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) published in January 2025, as reported by Citi Newsroom.

Which cement is best for making blocks?

According to the GSA guidance, 42.5R is suitable for producing concrete products such as building blocks and pavement slabs. CIMAF also lists Kantinka (CEM II/A-L 52.5N) for sandcrete block manufacturing.

Which cement is best for plastering and screeding?

The GSA guidance points to 32.5R grades for general work such as plastering, masonry and screeding. CIMAF lists Optimum (CEM II/B-M 32.5R) for block laying and screeding, and Ultimate Plus (CEM II/B-L 42.5R) for plastering and general masonry.

Which cement is best for columns and beams?

The GSA lists 52.5N for structural elements in high-rise buildings, such as beams, columns and suspended slabs. CIMAF lists Kantinka (CEM II/A-L 52.5N) for normal reinforced concrete, pavement concrete and high-rise construction.

Quick reference

  • Plastering, masonry, screeding: 32.5R, for example CIMAF Optimum
  • Blocks and pavement slabs: 42.5R, for example CIMAF Ultimate Plus
  • Reinforced concrete, columns, beams: 52.5N, for example CIMAF Kantinka
  • Small bags for block laying and screeding: Kantinka Hemaa, 25 kg
  • Mortar and concrete not under high stress: CIMAF Katakyie (CEM II/C-M 32.5N)

CIMAF's uses are as published by CIMAF. For any structural element, follow your engineer's specification, not a general guide.

Retailers: what should you stock?

Stock the grades your customers actually ask for. A shop near block makers sells more 42.5R. A shop serving contractors needs a 52.5N as well. See how to order by the truckload or go to our bulk cement page.
